As we all sit yearning for the impending onslaught of fall releases our good friend FDR, has graced us with a blink and you'll miss it preview from a project a little farther out. Broken Hearts & Blank Faces while without a release date has all the ingredients to raise anticipation. Produced entirely by Wesley Opus it consist of all Wesley Opus and Captain Midnight beats except for the track we're previewing this weekend. I Could Be is a beat made by FDR himself and fitting with the rest of the ep it is "a depressing, yet uplifting album with ranging topics from finding love, to losing love, being lied to, cheated on." We can't wait.

No Weak Heart Shall Prosper

I think the best kept secrets are those passed along by friends. That's how I first came to know about The Pirate Signal. While word of mouth whisperings and mixtape emails are all well and good I'd have to say that these days the secret is out. Begging to be blasted at maximum volumes to fully unleash its full genre bending mashup of awesome, this is most definitely not your kid sister's favorite emo indie rappers. So when given the opportunity to review The Pirate Signal's "No Weak Heart Shall Prosper" album, like any juicy secret, I couldn't resist sharing it with Miss Izzie and since two sets of ears are better than one this is our collaborative take on the album. As my friends can attest, I consider the word "review" to be a dirty word. A task I only perform when really truly warranted (No Bird Sing/Soulcrate.) While I've been a fan for a while this was Izzie's first introduction to The Pirate Signal.

For me personally, it was an acquired taste, but one that I grew increasingly fond of after each listen. From bits of drum & bass to rock, to auto-tune, scratches, guitar, banging drums.. the beats are unpredictable. At times I knew I was listening to something modern and cutting edge, while others I'd think I was hearing a blast from the past- late 90's rap-rock era. Yonnas has a distinct voice and tone. Lyrically he stands apart, darker than your average flow- layered with poetic lines. The female vocals on some tracks set it over the edge. I think Digital... Rock sum's up what you're in for; hip hop/digital rock/pop. But it still can't prepare you for the diverse hodge podge of musical elements.

The whole album feels like a hurricane in my headphone, taking you through a whirlwind of genre bending tracks. Songs that echo back in your brain for days. I admittedly get really attached to albums for extended periods of time. Crescent Moon is in Big Trouble? No Bird Sing? When I love on something I love on it hard. This is one of those albums that has yet to leave my playlist and I don't foresee living without it anytime soon.

Though I chose a different career path, as a musician at heart, I always dreamt of creating an album that could not be categorized into any genre. I wanted to create music period; therefore I wanted to make each song sound completely different than and unrelated to the next. With the P S, you kind of get a sense of this. If you were to leave this album playing straight through and carry on with whatever you were occupied with prior, you'd probably forget that you were listening to the same group half way through. Now, sometimes too much could be overwhelming and in turn, be a turn off. In this case, the P S gives you such variety that it keeps you interested; gives you a feeling of a book left open.. You can never quite put your finger on what you're hearing, so you continue to listen. Izzie gives two thumbs up.

The Maryland natives have gained the respect of their peers up and down the east coast. This year, the 5th annual "Rape" has expanded and is including a couple of friends from New York and New England.

Earth Day Amnesia

When I was a small child, I had a firm belief I could communicate with animals through my mind. I wept for fallen trees and my mother had to cover my eyes if we passed any roadkill before I'd lose it. I read every encyclopedia article I could get my little hands on that had anything to do with animals and the earth. I was an avid "Zoobooks" reader, I was glued to every nature show I could find.

When my mom and dad dragged me to the Kennedy Space Center one summer, I was miserable and bored out of my mind. Amongst the huge structures and impressive space artifacts and towering space shuttles, these ginormous reminders of man's conquest for technology and conquering of new frontiers, I became enthralled with an alligator in a nearby pond. Leaning over the ledge I watched in awe as this animal, millions of years of evolution and survival, merely existed the only way it knew how. A couple bystanders peered over with me, and I started spewing every Alligator fact I could recall, and when my parents returned to check on me, I had a crowd of people gathered and asking questions.

I have always been a deep-feeling person. I have this quality that has turned out to be a curse and a gift. I feel everyone around me, soaking in every anxious thought, every sorrowful expression, every joy and every loss. Something moves me and reverberates in my soul. I have found this trait to be of great aid in my career as a Habilitative Specialist for those with disabilities. But this quality keeps me up at night, brings me to tears and my worries ebb and swell. It pains me to see all this destruction, all this hate, and worst of all, all the indifference of what is REALLY going on.

Earth Day is more to me than a day to plant a tree or pick up garbage. Corny as it sounds, every day should be Earth Day. Where have we gone that we don't remember our roots? This earth has molded and strengthened our species. Our cultures used to be wrought with folklore of the wind, the sun and the leaves, spiders and the stars. How have we gotten such amnesia? Where did we turn away from our heritage? How do we go days without feeling grass between our toes, or looking up at the clouds? This isn't just some hippie shit; I'm talking about what we inherited from our past.

This Earth Day, and every day hereafter, I challenge you to do those things. Walk up to a tree and study the knots. Look at the years that have molded the scars on the bark. Feel the leaves between your fingers and watch the ants that scale its trunk. Observe the deep connection species have with each other, and question where yours have gone. Thank that tree for devoting its WHOLE life to creating air to fill your lungs, then think of football fields worth of forests of these trees being clear-cutted and destroyed like they're merely products. Since when does that tree not matter? That tree you see struggled through drought, fought the wind, soaked up the rain and persevered.

Getting to know yourself is getting to know your past. And your past is all around you.

Band Practice

Band practice was an interesting concept for the surprise shows P.O.S. (Stef Alexander) played around the twin cities this week. Preparing for Coachella Music Festival this Friday, Alexander dropped some subtle hints via Twitter and tested the waters with a performance much different then the standard DJ and MC combination.

Blending together a slew of talented musicians seems to be the haps in Minneapolis these days. It's rare to come across someone who is making music and isn't in multiple bands. While that may be normal, now it's become quite genre bending and it's been a really amazing thing to watch unfold. Alexander and his DJ Plain Ole Bill teamed up with drummer Ben Ivascu, Isaac Gale who you may have seen filming and taking pictures on the every never is now tour now singing, screaming and playing guitar, Ryan Olson described by Alexander as playing instruments you wont understand blend together to bring these songs to a whole new place.

Encouraging the crowed to sing along if you know the words, add in on the "ohhhs" and mosh when appropriate P.O.S. still embodied the charismatic performer we all know. Being backed up by a band of musicians buzzing with energy and playing nearly flawless sets, really did not come across as a practice run at all. Ivascu on the drums, is nearly show stealing adding a backing to the already thunderous beats of songs from Never Better and P.O.S is ruining my life added a lair that you almost can't imagine the songs without. The addition of these truly talented musicians brings a rap set to an entirely new level. If you're at Coachella this weekend, this is a performance that shouldn't be missed. And for everyone else, if we're lucky Alexander will take this line up on the next tour, because it really is something to be seen.

Lovesong for the Upper Left Coast

Here at Lovefest we focus on the things that we enjoy about hip hop, which is why I hope you as a region, Pac NW, forgive me for being a little hard on you all as fans. Prior to moving here I had heard it plenty from the artists themselves - "*insert city here* doesn't give a shit about artists until they've moved away." For a long time I thought it was absurd, maybe these dudes hadn't paid their dues yet and were being big rapper babies. However, upon moving here I found it to be completely true. Dues are being paid but where the fuck are you as fans? I don't want to be hard on you as a region because I love you all, Oregonians and Washingtonians, and in the short time I have lived in your states I have done nothing but fall in love with what you have to offer.

What I'm disappointed in is that you haven't done the same, especially when it comes to rap shows in your bigger cities (Portlanders and Seattlites I'm looking you square in the eyeballs.) I have made it a point to see everyone and anyone I can. These dudes (and the occasional dudettes) deserve more support than they're getting out here. I get that everyone wants their local artists to be Atmosphere (you've made that quite apparent by playing it in every bar and before every show), but it's ok because no one else IS or WILL BE Atmosphere. That spot is reserved for Slug and Ant. In the meantime why not celebrate what you have.

I have been so fortunate during my time in the Pac NW to go to a variety of shows. However, I come from the land of sold out Black Clover, Doomtree, and Rhymesayers shows. Your local artists could have that level of a audience, if only you respected your local artists more and made the effort. In the end I hope that I piss some of you off because I feel like that's the only way you will prove me wrong. PROVE ME WRONG, DAMNIT! What do you need? They all have twitters that will tell you when their shows are, or Myspaces (If you're still into that). You can even "fan" them on Facebook. I just want to grab you by your shoulders and shake each and every one of you in the Upper Left Coast. As Kanser says, "Support Broke Rappers!"

Q's&A's with the "Rocky Dennis" Tour Crew

Last weekend Miss Crista came to visit the East Coast for the first time. Our plan was to attend a few shows as the "Every Never is Now" tour stopped through the Mid-Atlantic Region. While she was here, there happened to be another tour rollin' through as well! In anticipation of Dez & Nobs' new album "Rocky Dennis", said to release this spring on Grizzly State Records, Dezmatic, along with a few friends, were playing shows up and down the East Coast. Unfortunately, by the time Crista arrived off of the plane that Friday night, we showed up at the Strathmore Mansion just as Educated Consumers, Timmy Wiggins and Dezmatic were shaking hands with fans, thanking them for their purchases at the merch. table and seeing them off for the evening.
(Ps. I want my money back for those tickets, haha)
--Actually, although we were disappointed to have missed their live performances, I was super stoked to get a handful of copies of "Rocky Dennis", as it was only available for advanced purchase on this tour--

Thankfully, Lovefestonline.com and The 'Rocky Dennis' Tour had some mutual friends on the 'Every Never is Now' tour, performing the following evening at DC9. So before the show on Saturday, March 6th, we had a chance to catch up with them at Uncle Ben's Chili Bowl in our Nation's Capital to chit-chat about the new album, "Rocky Dennis", how their tour was going and some other randoms.

*** NOTE: Since I am the worst interview-er in history, the environment of the restaurant was hectic & loud, and there were so many people involved in the conversation, I will be paraphrasing the interview Q's & A's ;)

Lovefest: In the new video for "Dwight Gooden", its hard not to notice the fact that you guys are eating in every other scene. What is one favorite local spot of yours?

Dezmatic: Definitely Cafe 217. Its a breakfast spot that's open for the late night crowd. Ya know, a place for people to stop on the way home from the bars.

Lovefest: Name 5 "Must Have" places while on tour.

Dez: Ohhh, this is a great question because this is what we do. We love to eat and try new things. We're at one of them now, actually. Uncle Ben's Chili Bowl (DC) is always good. In Pittsburgh there is a place called Primanti's. When you're in the South, of course you're going to want to get BBQ, so I'm going to say Miss Ruby's Kitchen in Raleigh, North Carolina. Also, in New York, you have to stop at Crif Dog's.

Lovefest: Where is that located? In Brooklyn? The City? errr...

Dez: Nah, its in Manhattan. On St. Marks.

Seezmics: You know what I really like? I think Sonic is great.

Izzie: So Seez <3's>

--Break for a conversation about how Sonic doesn't always have locations in the same areas that the commercials are aired--

Lovefest: Seez and I have have talked about this in the past. But for the record.. How'd you and he started touring together? Also, what's it like to work with Seez; on tour and making music together?

Dez: I just do this for the money. I hate Seez.

Seez: When you make music independently and/or are not on a medium-large record label, you kind of have to reach out to others in your area/region who are doing similar projects in order to build a network. Its difficult to work your way up completely by yourself. So, it's good to have that support from others who are in the same boat as you. And of course I'm not going to work with people just because I get along with them. I have to actually like their music and support what they do..

Lovefest: Right, I remember you saying that when we spoke about you're last tour, for instance. Like when you took Cubbiebear with you, you obviously knew he was a good artist and hard worker, and in the end, he fully appreciated the opportunity you gave him. Seez: Exactly. So anyway, I met Nobs at Scribble Jam many years ago. We kept in touch and he stayed with me some time later, when he came down for a Warped Tour. Later, after their release of Behemoth (Dez & Nob's First Album) is when I met Dez. I liked the work that they were doing and so we started setting up shows to play together. And the rest is history..

Lovefest: So Dez, what about Nobs? How did you two meet and fall in love?

Dez: Well, [a former] girlfriend of mine went to Scribble Jam years back and among other things kept raving about this particular CD she got with Phlegm and Nobs on it. I gave it a listen and really liked it as well. So I reached out to Nobs initially. We met a few times and he came out to see me perform. I was keeping busy putting out multiple demos of my own and he was working with [Hand Held Aspects] and [3 Sides of a Circle]. -Long story short- In the meantime, we eventually started working on music together and released Behemoth in 2006.

Lovefest: Ok, so let's talk touring. You've done mostly East Coast shows so far. Do you see yourself venturing out into other parts of the country in the future?

Dez: Most definitely, I love traveling. I want to get back to Minneapolis. I like California and Texas. I mean, this is what I ultimately want to do; play shows all over. We're actually going to be in Europe in May. One place I would love to go is Hawaii! I would love to get out there.

Lovefest: Aside from your home town, what has been your favorite city to perform in?

Dez: I like performing in Connecticut. Lots of Cardboard City folks up there. Umm, Cincy, Pittsburgh, DC, Minneapolis. Honestly, I like to perform where I walk into a place and the crowd is ready to have fun, no matter what you throw at them. When you are trying to perform for people who are kind of uptight and not ready to get down/ have fun with you..

Lovefest: Like ...[index finger to the nose to lift the head up]... Snobby?

Dez: Right. I mean mostly places I just mentioned draw crowds that are fun, but none like Albany and CT. It's as if we're performing for family. Everyone is welcoming and excited to hear us no matter what.

Lovefest: What about venues? What are the best/your favorite venues to perform in? I know as someone who attends LOTS of shows, there are certain things that I may like/dislike about certain venues that sometimes sway my decision as to whether I will attend. But a concer-goer's perspective is different than the performers..

Dez & Seez: Well, its more so the crowd that matters, not necessarily the venue. We also like to try different venues each time we go to a city.

Dez: The staff that work at these venues plays a role in whether we like the place or not, as well.

Lovefest: I totally agree. I personally don't like to go to 9:30 in DC because I think the staff there are [not nice].

Dez: You know what the most important thing is, honestly? The sound man! Seriously, if you don't have someone that knows what they're doing, it could ruin a show.

Seez: "YEAH! Having a venue without a good sound man is like having sex with someone that's alseep!"

Lovefest: Dude, I'm going to quote you on that. For real.. that's hilarious.

Lovefest: Ok, so we've gotta know.. what has been your strangest or most memorable tour moment EVA??

*Seez, Dez and Timmy all looked at each other simultaneously and started laughing*

Seez: Can I take this one? haha.. Ok, so we were just in VA playing a show in Richmond.
There were of course local acts that were opening up for us. So there were these two guys. One was rapping about blunts and 40's, ect. and he would pass the mic off to this other guy. Well, the other was a much more aggressive rapper. No lie, this dude had on a wrestling belt. Like a WWE -type massive wrestling belt.

Lovefest: Wow, so it sounds like these two rappers were like extreme opposites. As if they were on different ends of a 'rap' spectrum.

Seez: Yeah; strange combination. So, after the second guy would finish rapping and passed the mic back to the first guy, he would just stand there; Arms folded in front of him, chest sticking out and a completely serious look on his face. I mean this guy would literally hold his arm out to someone in the crowd and affirm them, as if he was gunning for them. I mean this guy was dead serious.

Lovefest: Oh my goodness, so he kept the role going as to keep the crowd entertain? Like he believed he was that character and wouldn't break from it?

Seez: Yeah, he believed in his product.

Dez: Ha, he sold crack, but he believed in his product.

**Note: Lovefest attempted to record this story on camera, although failed miserably due to the noise volume in the restaurant. Unfortunately I wasn't able precisely recreate/describe the story that Seez told, because I am an admittedly terrible story-teller. However, they will be posting footage of was just talked about on StashboxTV. Stay tuned..

Lovefest: So as far as tours go, what would be your ideal line up, to play with?

Dez: I like to do shows with my friends and who's art I respect. Louis Logic, Timmy and Seezmics obviously, Alaska from Hangar 18 is a good dude..

Lovefest: I know this is like asking you to go to work yet being told you're not allowed to work... but who would you like to see? What would be your ideal line up to sit back and watch?

Dez: Big-Biz and the Melvins, Jay-Z, Sade, Portishead, Atmosphere has always put on a good show. Definitely ICE CUBE! excited to go see him at Paid Dues this year! Ice T.

Timmy: Slick Rick and Doug E Fresh!!

Dez: Anyone with a live band as well. I saw Jay-Z with a band; that was Phenomenal. The Roots; always a great show.

Lovefest: Im a huge Roots fan. I have a tradition where every time I drive into Philly I put on Illadelph Half life.

Dez: Oh! Also, A Tribe Called Quest. I saw them a while back at "Party in the Park" in Albany's Lincoln Park. They got on stage and the crowd was out of control.

--As we we're leaving the restaurant, we continued our conversation in transit to the venue--

Lovefest: I know you've stayed busy in the meantime, but how does it feel to finally release this follow up album?

Dez: I feel like I've been pregnant for four years.

Lovefest: Haha. What is your formula for making music?

Dez:Im a work horse. I don't really think about it too much. I just do it. I make music like I'd check off a grocery list. Each song revolves around a certain theme, so I just go through and make each song as it pertains to something I may be thinking about or would like to address.

Lovefest: Well, what can fans expect from this album? What would you like to say to your fan base as a whole; older or newer fans?

Dez: This album is straight to the point. Our last album seemed to have more anomalies. We have also endure more shit in our lives since Behemoth.

Lovefest: Right, so of course that's going to filter through..

As the fat rain drops plop loudly out my window, I'm sitting here thinking about Spring. For me, as for many, spring is an intoxicating mix of sorrow and hope, despair and rebirth. The earth begins awakening from slumber, and with that comes change: large and minute. The birds return one, two, three at a time. The storm clouds rumble and roll in with fervor, and all this change can awaken a little craziness in us all. My nephew, born with cerebral palsy and many saddening birth defects, has just had his first birthday, a HUGE milestone for such a tiny baby with so many struggles just to survive. So with this, I am posting this FREE mixtape as a sort of moody celebration of death and rebirth. Both are necessary and both are beautiful. Relay For Life: Izzie's Story

Forgive me while I step aside from the crazy, music loving, concert-going Izzie that you all have come to know online and step into a serious role that is my life. I want to share part of my life with you, a part that the majority of you do not know, in hopes that you can help support me to make a difference.

I grew up a middle child of 1 Boy and 3 Girls; I was the middle girl. I still have the middle child syndrome, haha. But one thing that I could appreciate was that my mother never really made my siblings or I feel neglected, or more/less loved that any other. She had a way of making everyone feel loved, at peace, respected and cared for. From her I learned how to be strong, loving and, most importantly, patient.

My mom, Alice, was a very out-going person who could make friends with anyone, even the stranger at the grocery store or the homeless man at the corner. She'd give the shirt off her back, last dime out of her pocket or a place to sleep and a warm meal to anyone in need. I could write a book on the good she had done in her life, but I'm going to try to get to the point here..

Alice developed and auto-immune disease before I was ever even born, so she was sick my whole life; but this never effected her spirit. Then she was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of breast cancer when I was only 12 years old. I remember being in 7th grade and yet in the hospital with her when she had a double mastectomy (breast removal) and went through her Chemo/radiation treatments. The doctors would say the type of cancer she had was so aggressive that most women with this form of malignancy could only survive for a year & a half TOPS! So you could imagine the anxiety I had as a young girl, believing her mother would die at any moment. I continued to live with this for years..

Fortunately, she went into remission for 5 years. She maintained a positive attitude, had a strong faith in God and refused to let go before she saw kids grow up. My family would supported her when she would go to Relay For Life events and we really did raised a lot of money over the years. My Mom always loved the Ocean and wished that she could live near the water. Well, she got her wish, I suppose, but she wasn't specific enough. My father's job relocated us to the Midwest, near Lake Michigan, where she would spend the rest of her life.

When I was around 17 or so, the cancer returned, and slowly would spread to her bones and liver over the next three years. I spent countless hours at doctors offices with her while she had chemo, coached her with physical therapy treatments when she had her hips replaced, gave her shots at home to boost her immune system, I had taken science and anatomy classes in high school so that I could help her decipher what information medical professionals would give her about her blood work and what not... in retrospect, I realize it was a bit much for such a young girl to carry all that on her shoulder on top of work, school, social life, ect. I decided to stay home instead of going away to college to see through that she was taken care of. I mean, what was I suppose to do? How could I leave my dying mother (as my older siblings both did when they were 17) when she needed support the most?

A few years past and she was in and out of the hospital. And on a cold yet sunny winter day, four days before Christmas in 2004, she took her last breath that morning in the hospital while my brother and I sat beside her. She was only 52. I was with her for the entire roller-coaster ride. From the day she came home from the doctors crying, telling me she had found a lump in her breast, to the day she left this earth. I watch her deteriorate and eventually die over the course of my teenage years.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm one of the most fortunate people on earth to have been blessed with such an amazing mother. A woman who positively changed the lives of MANY people. But I also watched a disease take the life of someone who didn't deserve to die such a slow and horribly painful death.

After she passed I saw through that my younger sister graduated high school and afterward I moved back to the East Coast to begin MY life. I needed to learn how to take care of MYself, because all I ever knew how to do was take care of other people. It took me a long time to truly come to terms with what has happened in the past. And honestly, I have not done a single Relay for Life since I was a teenager doing it with her. I'm now 25 and realize that I need to reach out for support to do this just as she needed the support to. All those years that people were raising money, it really was for a good cause. Indirectly, it helped my mother stay alive 7 years longer than predicted with medical and technological advances. I had the chance to spend more time with her than I could have ever hoped for.

Everyone has a story like this. You could ask every person you see throughout the day, and I bet you that 80% of them have someone close to them who has/had cancer or has had it themselves.
So, I decided to finally do this again. As part of the "Woman in Science" Club at my school (Towson University), I will be walking on March 26-27 7p-7a. I'm asking for your support to help me do this for the first time in YEARS. Think about it, you could be helping someone like my mother who deserved to live a longer life. Someone like me who deserved to have a mother.

The Heartland Panic: go DJ, go DJ, go DJ!

What’s most noticeable about The Heartland Panic is the music behind the words. DJ Absolute’s production on this album is top-notch. Each track gives you something a little different, from a funky groove on “Clouds In My Head” to a throw back 50s groove on “Think About Me.” There was clearly a vision laid out that lent itself to a fluid collaboration between rappers and producer.

A Def once mentioned that when they started making music together, he and Dirt Dee sounded like the same person. "The Heartland Panic" gives Attn: Def and Dirty distinct voices; in tone, rhyme patterns, and lyrics.

With the classic instrumentation you get the feeling that "The Heartland Panic" should have a dance accompanying it by the same name, much like "The Hustle", "The Jerk", or "The Monster Mash." Everybody do "The Hearthland Panic!" You can’t help but move, or at least strut down the street, when you hear this album.

On the 12th day of Soulcrate . . .

If you remember nothing of an album you listened to, more often than not you at least remember the last track. In the case of "The Heartland Panic" the last track, "Learn From It," combines a rock guitar and marching band snare to back an empowering lyrical anthem. This is a track that delivers a "grit your teeth and get on with it" message. The hook is one that anyone who has faced a struggle can relate to. "Learn From It" is one to blast on your headphones while holding your head high.

Sleep Awake

Sleep Awake, the eleventh track of Soulcrate's The Heartland Panic, struck me as something quite easy to relate to. The song unfurls like one's thoughts at the end of one's day, lying in bed wondering what this world is coming to. The stress, the people, the pace of life, the mundane tasks and overwhelming responsibilities all seem to pile up when you're trying to get some rest. This track approaches said issues in almost a relaxed manner, perhaps even defeated at times and the subject matter flirts with both sides of the proverbial coin- the metaphors and relationships between sleep and death, and the finality of one and the relief of both, sometimes interchangeable. This song shows a maturity these Black Clover boys have come to develop in ways only life experiences can teach.

Think About Me

After a strong intro to the record and a dense filling, "Think About Me" takes you back to a lighthearted, upbeat tune. If you sit back and listen, their flow equates to riding an ocean wave. Rarely do you find artists with the ability to successfully sing and rap simultaneously, but Soulcrate is always on point with it. Towards the end of the track, the piano peeks its head out from behind the trumpet and finger-snaps to let you know whats up. What's up is clearly a head bopping, rap a long dance party in a few short weeks when the Blood in the Heartland Tour hits your home town. Songs like this are my favorite part of shows because even the surliest of heads are sure to be nodding along. See you theeerree. MAKE IT BREAK

Blue collar, Holla!

Soulcrate has been on the grind and it shows, yet they sure are having a blast doing what they love. So, why not make a song about it? This song is just straight up fun and any hard-working listener can appreciate and clap along... Although "Make it Break" is not my favorite track on the album, per se, it is a vital one! Still coming strong with the horns and almost a funk intro. Initially the only thing I didn't fancy about the song was that the beat sounded like an intro throughout the whole track; you sense that build up, as if something is suppose to come in and break the monotony. But just because that specific aspect isn't personally appealing (strictly in comparison to other beats on the album), you'll realize it is exactly what is needed to keep the song high-energy for them to express the underlying theme; Work, Sleep, Music, Productivity.

I think we've all heard this one by now... except maybe the sticklers (we see you Froes #lethalville) who are holding out for the full album experience next week. I'm going to have to agree with our Lethalville brethren on this one as it does make me want "to go bonkers all over it." Old Vs. Dumb calls to mind how hype these guys can get a crowd. If you've ever been to a Soulcrate show you know they'll have you a sweaty hot mess before they're even half through with you. Its no easy feat translating the energy and intensity of an artist's live show onto a record but this gives a definite glimpse of what to expect when these dudes take command of the stage. And in case you've been sleeping you can still wake up and peep what you've been missing with the free download of this track over at 2Dope Boys. Drop Sound

When it came time to divvy up tracks for this project the fairest way seemed to be by luck of the draw. So we threw numbered scraps in the old Black Clover fitted and alphabetically songs were drawn for each lady. It is only fitting of course that the born and raised North Wester would draw the most somber song on the album. While not my favorite Drop Sound, is probably personally the most relatable track on The Heartland Panic. It could easily soundtrack those long gloomy S.A.D. filled months from November to February where leaving the house is a near impossible feat yet the thought of hopping the next train, plane or spaceship to anywhere but here lingers tauntingly. Outgrown relationships and a city turned too small suffocation bring a sense of urgency anyone who's been trapped in either situation can appreciate.

The 13 Days of Soulcrate: Keep Hope Dead

Beginning as an anthem with the battle cry "They're tryna keep hope dead" in time with a solitary snare, one would expect a solemn song of injustice, but this song evolves into an uplifting mix of horns and upbeat verses. Both emcee's unleash their stories of pursuing and pressing on all to a dance-friendly beat and echoing claps, staying true to their vow to liberate from average. This song is a valid addition to The Heartland Panic, showing their skills in creating an anthem without sounding redundant or preachy. Definitely a jam that will be played in my hooptie piece of shit... if I ever fix the cd player!

The Thirteen Days of Soulcrate: Electric Heavy Glow

On the fourth day of SOULCRATE my headphones gave to me.....

DRUUUUUUUUUMS!

Perhaps I'm partial to a damn good drum beat due to my deep roots in percussion, but this song is off the bloody hook!! (One of my favorite sticking techniques is a dulled, single-stick drum roll on the snare -- which you can hear every other measure of this song). The heavy hovering over the trio of hi-hat, bass & snare, complemented by electric guitar, will set you up for people to look at you sideways when you've got your ear buds in, in public-- First the knee bend, then head nod and the swaying back & forth...

These guys are going pretty hard on this track, spitting some bold lyrics in yo' face! Now, the two have always had a unique style of flow that can essentially be heard throughout most verses in their songs. Its what would allow one to differentiate between them and other artists in a "name that group"-type listener response. But with this song, they tend to step aside from that at moments to branch out and try something new; it certainly works for them. You will feel the glow from the fiery blaze left after the songs time has run out, 'cause this song is FIYAH!

"Oooooooooh"... and by the end of the song, this fairly simple yet fun hook will have you join in unison. If you're trying to jam out, I say go grab the album March 9th and skip to track 4;

"Get set, Ready, GO!!"

The 13 days of Soulcrate: Evil In It

Track two, isn't the typical song I think of when I think if Soulcrate Music. It's a little bit darker, and a little bit louder, but they took it there, and they killed it.

When I think of "The Heartland Panic" this song is just that. It's a soundtrack song, for driving late at night in the bitter cold playing loud. The drums, hit hard, and the bass line is strong. The layered vocals showcase just how A Def and Dirt Dee are a force in making music together.

This is one of those stand out tracks on the album, maybe not the party song or the single. But it has significance, it's that track that talks to you.

In anticipation of the new Soulcrate Music release, "The Heartland Panic," we at Lovefest will be posting our thoughts on and reviews of each track. Keep an eye on the site for the next thirteen days, a number appropriate for for the Black Clover family. One track will go up each day with the last day being dedicated to our over arching feelings on the record. We can't wait for you to hear this album and know you'll be just as blown away as we have.

It was no secret we were about to listen to something special when Jeremy Willis asked us to participate in the pre-listening, but when the introduction swelled and and the horns punched, special soon became an understatement. What a way to set the tone, gentlemen. This is one classy and sophisticated album as made apparent from the first track on.

Much like "Cardobard Intro," "Let It Shine" is a track you can see A Def and Dirt Dee making an entrance to. The production by DJ Absolute is musically thoughtful and the band incredibly in sync. This track is a statement as to what's to come, not only with the album but the artistic growth of Soulcrate Music.

Saturday February 13th

The Best Love is Free

A collective show put on by Death to the Static records and Hopefull Opus productions in Minneapolis MN, celebrating Valentines in a unusual manner....

This is how shows should be, for $8.00 at most you walked into a venue and were handed a mixtape of an assortment of artists spanning 32 tracks. Which was followed by music by a wide array of musicians including, DJ Bandage, Sector 7g, Silentarmy, Culture Cry Wolf, Kanser and ending the night with a DJ set by Mr. Dibbs.

To some this sounds like a lineup that may not mix well, and fan-bases that don't usually intertwine. But the night presented it self seamlessly and the entire place was dancing and having a good time.

Maybe it was the holiday spirit, maybe it was the free mixtape, maybe it was because the venue was packed with amazing talent and the music didn't stop all night. Between acts DJ Bandage kept the energy level high, and the people happy.

The high-point of the night was when Culture Cry Wolf took the stage, a mix of indie rap, ska, and punk with rapping over a live band brought the energy through the roof. The transition from Cultrure Cry, to Kanser was seamless and Zach and Unicus kept the energy high. I think each ended the night with new fans, these acts really do mix in the best sort of way.

Keep an eye out for more parties throw by Death to the Static, because this is the kind of event a rap show should be.

Kanser is celebrating the release of their new album "Two for One" at the Triple Rock Social Club this Friday the 26th and Culture Cry wolf is playing a Free show with Ecid and Reflection City at the 501 Club on Saturday the 27th. Both of these shows will be something you shouldn't miss.

You don’t need to be from the Midwest to respect the work that Kanser puts out to the public, though they may reference it quit a bit. The new album from Minneapolis Hip Hop Heavyweights Big Zach (New MC) and Unicus, “Two for One,” is a different approach from past artistic processes. Big Zach's words are heard on the first set of six tracks while Unicus takes over the second set of seven

Alicia Steele is a welcomed addition to the group. Her crisp words and soulful melodies are featured first on the track “Son Don’t Remember” and trickle through the rest of the Big Zach tracks. Production on this half, marked by Big Jess and Baby Gracious, has a very personable vibe.

Natalie Fine is also making her mark on a Kanser album. She has long been part of More Than Lights, often heard on the festival circuit as well as blowing up Hip Hop concerts. Her voice lends a playful vibe to Unicus’ half. While Unicus touches on midwest subjects he stays true to the lighthearted island groove produced by Kahtra-Quey and the Goodfellas.

For a group that has been together for 15 years, these gentlemen are simply keeping it fun this go-around. Those of you lucky enough to live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area do not want to miss the upcoming release party. “Two for One” will be celebrated at the Triplerock Social Club on Friday, February 26th. Good news for the young-ins, this will be an 18+ show.

Hello Lovefesters

On what has become my typical weekend train ride commute between Portland and Seattle I got to thinking . . .

The world was witness to a terrible tragedy - the earthquake that struck Haiti. No one should ever have to go through such a devastating experience. With that being said, there were so many compassionate people that banded together to raise awareness. Some were celebrated, and some were poo-pooed. One effort should not be judged more over the other.

Some people thought the recent "We Are The World" recording was a mess, but look at it for what it is, all of those artist bringing attention to an issue we all need to band together on. How smart - they all have different fans that they are bringing awareness to through their music. Somehow they managed to find time in their busy lives to get into a studio in a short window of time. Good for them for taking a stand a making their fans aware. Sure, you wont find most of these artists on any other track together, but if you respect the work any one of them has done then respect the attention they are bringing to the cause. Put yourself in the shoes of the survivors - if there were people out there that could use their influence to bring awareness to your issue you would want them to. We are ignorant to think that a disaster as bad as Haiti could not happen to any other country, especially the developed world we in the US live in. Having seen families beaten down due to natural disasters I urge you to support the relief efforts in Hait.

So my personal goal for this week is to find time between stuffing my face with Shallowmom's Chile Relleno casserole and brand spanking new Macklemore heading straight from the Nectar release shows to my earphones to unpack my suitcase from this falls Kansas City adventures so I can spend Tuesday repacking it for Minneapolis. (Do you have your Blowout/Mac Lethal with Andrew W.K./Go Machine/etc. tickets for next week yet? Snap to it!) As ever, more obstacles abound...

It's enough to make a girl's head spin all the fantastic options in this post food coma Friday evening. Scarf down that turkey salad sandwich and make your way down to Nectar at 5.30pm for the all ages early show for the release of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's "Vs." ep hosted by Grynch and featuring performances by Hella Dope, The Nextdoor Neighbors, Kung Foo Grip and DJ Sabzi. If you're 21+ you can chase that down with round two at 10pm with the likes of The Physics, Symmetry, Xperience, The Next Door Neighbors and DJ Terry Radjaw hosted by Larry Mizell Jr. Both shows are a bargain at $8 in advance each. More Than Lights...

I've seen a lot of rappers rap and singers sing, my taste in music moves far beyond the hip hop scene. Music is just on of those things that I can find something I love in a million different styles, like I'm sure most of you are. But you know how you have that one c.d. that you don't really admit to listening to. Or that concert you went to when you were 12 that doesn't come up in conversation? Well, think about the opposite of that album and those artists. The act that is easy to recommend to just about anyone. The show that you can invite all of your friends to because it is just good, fun and real.

That's the place I would put More than Lights, they're a group I've seen grow and change over the years. They are dropping an album, their first album and it's pretty damn exciting. The current line up have been playing together since 2007 but they root back to 2002 where three of the members met at an Arts High-school in Minneapolis. Along the way they were joined by New MC and Unicus, in 2004; the group is now 7 members strong and catching them live is something to be seen.

The album is 11 songs long and called, The Electric Prescription For All Your Funky Illz it is dropping this Saturday, November 21 at the Cabooze in Minneapolis.

I feel you I passed up Mux Mool at ToST Wednesday night in favor of NyQuil and a heating pad myself. That said there are still plenty of reasons to peel yourself off the couch, put some pants on and venture into the world.

Kick off the weekend right down in Freemont on Friday night at the Nectar for the "Purple Ribbon EP" release show with Clockwork, Peoples w/Alto & R.O.B., State of the Artist, SK and DJ Soundwave. Tickets are only $7 in advance & before 11pm or $10 at the door. 21+

Saturday the only place I want to be is The Rendezvous for the Dark Time Sunshine album release and video premier. I'm going to have to INSIST that you go download BELIEVEYOUME immediately if you haven't already. With just 40 spots this will be a cozy night of Seattle hip hop featuring the likes of JFK/Ninjaface, Sleep, Candidt, Xperience, Pale Soul w/Sick Aura, DJ Zone and Patrick the Magician. If you're not lucky enough to make it into that you can always head over to the Showbox at the Market and have your face blown off by the antics of Super Geek League the self proclaimed best live act in Seattle. I'd go for the glitter alone. I'll be hanging on your every tweet while stuck at work.

Sunday run your errands early, dvr Dr. Drew's Sex Rehab and head down to Neumos at 8pm because Warren G is in town with local openers Grynch and They Live!. Time to cash in some of that hard earned allowance ($18) youngins because this one is all ages.

Next Wednesday (11/25) while I perfect my holiday pies you should reunite with Grieves & Budo at Neumos when the Strange Journey Tour rolls through town with Cunninlynguists and Looptroop. (8pm/All Ages) We'll compare notes when I get back from Minneapolis where I'll see them throw down with Unknown Prophets at the legendary First Ave.

Our Northwest neighbors down in Portland can catch Kublakai and Abadawn opening for Sleep this Sunday at Satyricon along with Hives Inquiry, Gepetto & Daps, and Flyvek. I imagine you may run into everyone's favorite South Dakota Red that night.

San Diego

Our Cali fam is of course encouraged to catch up with Lovefest faves Grynch, Kublakai and Abadawn in San Diego Thursday night on the last stop of the Lights tour.

Thursday join Fifth Element and the Big Quarters for the two year anniversary of Last of the Record Buyers. Time flys. This Is the Wild West

You didn’t really think Lovefest would miss out on Kublakai and Abadawn on the “Follow The Lights” Tour did you? Luckily it’s only an hour train ride from my new home in Portland to Salem, OR where the tour stopped Saturday night. With a little adventure encouragement from fellow Lovefest ladies I walked across the pedestrian bridge by my apt to Union Station and took the next train heading south. When I got on the train I instantly threw on “The Basics” and “Lights for the Dark Nights." My apologies for the lack of photos and videos but I forgot my cellphone charger and didn't think to bring my camera, although I wish you all could have been there for the dancin’ man. Seriously, I want to look this dude up and make him a “ Kublakai Superfan” t-shirt; homie was going harrrrrd on the dance floor.

Because the train schedule worked out the way it did I missed all but the last two tracks in Abadawn’s set. Aside from Kubi holding it down, I wasn’t paying as close attention to the rest of the show because I hadn’t anticipated writing anything about it. If you missed out on this stop have no fear, Portland, Kubi and Aba are coming through the area on Nov 22nd. If you missed the Oregon shows you can check out Satyricon next Sunday night. If you're living in Cali you have no excuse, the boys are heading your way.

Apparently Camobear decided to take over Oregon for the weekend so Sunday night I was lucky enough to catch the last stop on the “The Smorgasbord Tour.” Pigeon John and Josh Martinez have been calling the road home the past few weeks but luckily for Portland, they found their way to Backspace. This time around I had my phone charged, but I still haven’t figured out how the fucker works so my attempts at video recording failed.

 Iame of Sandpeople (and Oldominion AND Clockwerk) opened the show Sunday night. The first time I caught him was at the Knitting Factory in LA when he played with the rest of Sandpeople. It was great to see him rock a whole set and get the crowd hyped.  Eternal Family followed Iame and all I want to know is where these dudes came from. These three guys brought ALL their energy to the Backspace crowd.

Following Eternal Family was another dude I had yet to see. Since living in Portland, Aba had been telling me good things about Pigeon John so when Sunday rolled around and the opportunity to see him live of course I was going to go (as if there was any doubt with Josh Martinez attached to the show).

Speaking of Martinez - maybe it was the rendition of “Eye of the Tiger” or maybe it was when we all got “Drunk and Irish” but I've never had so much fun during a single rapper's set while flying solo at a show. As another artist I have only been able to catch when performing with others, his solo set was the cherry on the top of my weekend.

My boss told me that in order to meet more of "my kind of people" in another new city I “have to go to rap shows.” Whether or not that’s true it’s definitely where I feel most comfortable. Oregon has officially adopted me and in return I will give it nothing but time and respect. To it's artist (and bartenders) I will give them nothing but my hard earned dollars.

Maybe it’s because my hometown and my current home city depended on the great explorers, Lewis and Clark, for their discovery (also the name of my elementary school alma mater) or because my hometown was so close to the border we’re practically Canadian (the home country of Josh Martinez (Where you at Halifax?)) but of all the places I have seen shows I feel that the PacNW is the closest thing to home I have. I'm excited to continue to musically explore this new region of mine.

Last night Abadawn, Grynch and Kublakai (of the Let Go) kicked off their West Coast "Follow the Lights" tour at Hells Kitchen in Tacoma. Unfortunately I did not make it out this time but I didn't have to catch this performance to assure you that a good time were had by all. I've seen each of these acts enough times to know they do not disappoint. Whether or not Kubi accepted a tattoo as payment for cds I couldn't say... I did however capture Grynch and Kublakai performing a song together back in September at the Light For The Dark Nights ep release show:

He said "Right across from White Castle," and there it was: Merlins, what seemed to be a shabby hole-in-the-wall bar in South Minneapolis.
Crista and I were on a mission: to consume cold beverages and to get to know a musician that has recently appeared on the radar locally, and since this summer's release, Recession Music, nation-wide.

We sat and Prof spotted the pair of out-of-place girls in a booth and he kindly joined us for a little chat. Soon into the interview, a woman approached our table
and offered our guest a paper bag of...vegetables? "Home grown!", she yelled over the boisterous live band and pub chatter, "Get some fiber in your diet, get your ass pumpin out that poop!"

Suddenly humored and well into our first round, we started the interview inquiring about the relationship between Interlock and Stophouse (Interlock was a well-known Indie label
with such artists as Kanser/New MC, Twisted Linguistics, Prof & Rahzwell, St. Paul Slim, Acoustic Beatdown, and More Than Lights whose artists abruptly dispersed into other projects).

Jamee &Crista: "SO what's the deal with Interlock and Stophouse?"

Prof: "Big Zach met Dylan Parker, who was the head of Interlock...with Mike Campbell. And you know me, Slim, Rahzwell got together. I met all those dudes and I was a part of Interlock and blah, blah blah. I think 3 years ago?"

C: So you were a part of Interlock, which desintigrated, and now you're in Stophouse.

P: "Stophouse is a different label with a different focus."

C: Who is officially a part of Stophouse?

P: "Myself and Slim, Rahz comes with me, and helps me do the live shows."

J: "Is the label looking to sign anymore acts?"

P: "We're looking to get new artists, but...no one's really good right now. We want really, really good ones."

We all laughed.

The conversation rolled off our tongues easily. Then I thought of my Lethalville friends and asked:

J: "So how did you get associated with Black Clover?"

P: "Soulcrate had invited me to do a show in Sioux Falls and we had a really good time," he said, grabbing a tomato from his bag, "They were just really, really nice and that hospitality stuck with me."

As he took a bite, his tomato exploded.

As he attempted to clean up the mess, he contined, "They were doing sold out shows, I was definitely fuckin' with 'em. Definitely planning on doing more with them."

J: So are there any more projects coming up with Black Clover?

P: "Actually myself and Slim just made a song with Mac." Crista cooed over Mac "Aww I love him!" As we all giggled he contined, "It's over a mainstream beat. Mac texted me sayin "DUDE! HOW FAST CAN YOU WRITE A VERSE!?" And I was like "Pretty fuckin fast, since most of my verses take around 15 minutes to write. I said 'Why the hurry?' he said: "ONE WORD: NIKE!" I'm not sure he was serious, but yeah."

We chatted about studio renovations, the niceness of Black Clover, and the bacon guys at Beerfest.

J: What is your story until now?

P: "It's like a lot of people's. South Side Minneapolis, sorta hood, not a lot different than anybody else. I don't go outta my way to call myself "underground".

J: Do you find the over-saturation of rappers in Minneapolis a way to step your game up, or is it frustrating?

P: "I'm not sayin 'Yo, I'm another white rapper. It's a good pedigree of people coming out of Minneapolis, I just want people to remember my music. Not my story. Blah blah blah."

J: I've noticed a bit of playful aggression toward women, epecially in Recession Music, and I wanted to know if being raised by all women affects you.

P: When I'm with my people I'm myself. I've got black friends, I've got white friends, and when I'm with my girl friends I might slap 'em in the ass and call 'em sluts. It's funny that comedians can play on all sorts of racist and sexist issues, but when an artist contradicts himself or says something degrading, he's in trouble. I'll say shit about guys, I'll tell rappers "I'll murder you." If a dude is a douche bag I'll let him know. I almost think it's sexist if you don't hold women to the same level. Once I try to be politically correct here, then someone will pounce on the time I said something different there. When I'm on the dancefloor, sometimes I want ten of the best models, a bottle of champagne, and a blunt." He continued: "Sometimes when I feel like partying, it'll be like that. Other times my girl is the only thing in the world."

C: I've noticed there's a lot of party music, and a lot of songs about your mother. I haven't seen "this is my story" or typical hip hop songs about your past.

P: "Uuuhhh I dunno. I got a song called Baby Jacob about me being a little kid and being on welfare and my parents split. "

C: Yeah there usually is one serious song and the rest are rowdy

P: I've seen a bunch of fucked up shit, but sometimes I just laugh. When someones pissed at me, especially my girlfriend, I'll just laugh cuz the whole thing is funny. It's gotten me in some trouble, but if you take life too seriously then fuck.

C: What's Gampo??

P: Gampo is a person, gampo is a way of life. Deep in South Side, Richfield," he was interrupted by drunken singing from our favorite Irishman(who is on Recession Music) , "when we were kids, one of my best friends. A friend in LA right now, he was CRAZY. He'd make people cry. This dude Gampo was just crazy. He would do he craziest shit I've ever seen in my life. To be pretty Gampo, I'd just eat someone else's food, take someone's drink here, climb trees when you're drunk.

C: How did you meet Rahzwell and Fundo?

P: I met rahzwell when we had the same class when 9/11 happened and we were all watching the tv. I turned to him and said "This is pretty fucked up" and he said "yeah man" and we just started talking about stuff. And he evenually started making beats and I rapped to 'em. We had a setup at my hosue- keyboard, computer, mpc. We got in a big fight and he went to Chicago for 8 months, we never talked. Then he came back and we..." The Irish man interrupts again, and we just can't help but listen to him speak.

P: " I met fundo through the scene, and Slim through Dylan Parker. There was a million people in Interlock and money everywhere, and Dylan helped us focus up."

C: I NEVER knew who you were before now.

J: I remember seeing you and Rahz back like 3-4 years ago opening for Golden.

P: "We used to be the one's getting in fights. Halloween one year there was a fight outside Dinkytowner at a show. Everyone's all dressed-up fighting in the middle of the street, I was swingin and there were hockey players and everyone had costumes and whatnot. I didn't know if I was hittin someone I knew. It was crazy. These days fighting in or around shows is real fucking stupid. Me and Rahz constantly find ourselves liking to on the road... you'll get someone coming up to you after shows sayin you aint shit, your a fag, or something stupid. That's when you got to check your situation, take a step back and realize that your in a very lucky position, your in a public position, and you got to let that slide. I cant tour the country on some crusade mission. When you think about it, the more people who know you, like you, love your music, the more people would like to fight you, or at least try to get you angry. You'll always get those one in a hundred. You just got to keep your eyes on the other ninety nine who are very happy to see you, and focus on those relationships."

J: What should we expect in the next year?

P: "We're calling the project Gampo 2 but it's gonna change. Really good rap, singing, good shit."

C: Everyone is saying Recession Music is one of the best projects of the year. What do you think of that?

P: I expected it. We worked really hard. We put in a lot of work.
We breezed through his CalSurf sponsorship, his sold-out show at Fine Line (CD Release Party) and his plans "To sell out First Ave. That's my goal." We explained Lovefest and our goals to expose our favorite bands/artwork/and interests through awesome blogging. Apparently he was a little intimidated:

P: Were you hurt when I called a woman a chickenhead?

We laughed, and Crista explained: I respect what you do, and I think "you know, he's doing something totally different."

J: I see a lot of insecurity in hip hop, where some people are afraid to touch the issue, and others like to slap the bitches up. Your music finds the middle ground."

Prof explained that in a previous interview, a woman mentioned that "A Month From Now" really hurt her. P:When you get someone who's telling the truth, whether it's good or it's "Fuck that bitch" people are shocked by that, but it's real. Know what? That's a good thing. I'm a painter. I like movies, and sometimes I like being scared, some things make me hurt. It's real. I don't wanna be politically correct all the time."

My inner artist geeked out. "So do you do art anymore?" P: "I love painting. I did the artwork for Recession Music, I'm the creative director of Stophouse." We talked about paints and methods and art history, and the conversation began winding down.

The rest of the night included Jameson, an interesting horseshoe-like game called Quoits, and erotic vegetable photography. One reading this might feel there is no shortage of ego with Prof, but even if that's true, it's well-deserved. Living by a work-hard-play-hard ethic has payed off for Prof and Rhazwell (as well as his Minneapolis peers), and in typical Midwest fashion: if nothing else, Prof can drink you under the table. Don't make him bring out the Gampo side...

This fall sure was a great time for the Educated Consumers to do what they do best. In anticipation of their fourth full length album, "Hello Big Mama", the guys hit the road and had a few friends along side-- Dezmatic, Cubbie Bear, and Prolyphic -- to share the experience.

These fellas joined forces with Hiphoplovefest to bring you the very first tour of our "Disposible Camera Tour" Series. For the last half of the tour, they captured their behind scenes experiences on good old-fashion disposable film. From as far North as Portland, Maine, all the way down to our Nation's Capital, the east coast had the opportunity to catch an earful of some new tunes from the duo and experience a few of my favorite live acts out there!

Thin Ice

There are 52 days until the Copenhagen Climate Conference and this planet is on very thin ice with a very small window of opportunity closing at a rapid rate. We risk raising our planet by two degrees Celsius in our lifetime if we continue on this course. At that point we will be faced with catastrophic, runaway climate change. We will lose up to 70% of all species within our lifetimes. We will see sea levels rise 6 feet putting many costal cities from Miami and Manhattan to San Diego and Seattle under water. To avoid this, countries MUST enact treaties that legally bind us to reducing global warming pollution.

The Kyoto Protocol is expiring soon. Every industrialized nation signed onto this treaty . . . except the United States. The world is desperate for the United States to lead this time around and what better chance to make it up to the world than at the Copenhagen Climate Conference, but we cannot do it alone. We need the power of the people behind us.

When you look back through time people power has done some amazing things for the sake of humankind. Because of people power in the United States alone, I, as a woman, can vote for a black President, that believes in Global Warming. Once again it is up to the people to raise their voices so that we are heard as Global citizens. Our world leaders MUST hear us as this is the single most important fight that we are facing within our lifetimes.

Cuts have got to be made in the industrialized world. At the same time, however, we cannot demand change from industrializing countries without helping them. Wealthier nations must help poorer countries develop clean energy such as solar and wind instead of coal and oil. On top of this, most importantly, we have to address the deforestation of what is left of our ancient forests. The clear cutting of these habitats and oxygen sources are releasing more CO2 into our atmosphere than all the planes, trains, and automobiles in the world combined.

President Obama MUST go to the Copenhagen Climate Conference and he MUST start behaving like a leader, not a politician. A treaty based on appearing reasonable to lobbyists and industry is not going to cut it. Science has got to be listened to.

Those of us that work on these issues don’t work on these issues because we think we’re going to stop Global Warming. We can’t. We work on these issues for the sake of the fight, for the hope that we can stop the worst case scenario from happening and at least give future generations a better shot. I don’t know about you but my friends, my family, and my home are too precious to lose to Global Warming. This is the only planet we have.

Dear Friends...

There are few things better than lazing around on a Sunday afternoon after a jam packed weekend of amazing people, music and food (shouts to my folks for hooking up the home cooking for a post bday meal last night.) I kicked the weekend off a little early by heading down to EQPT for the PRC fall release party featuring hot dogs, the PG boys and Sol. It was a beautiful sunshiney day on the Ave and it felt more like a mid summer barbecue than a fall clothing release outside EQPT. A little after 3 we crammed and squished ourselves inside for the PG boys followed by Sol on the mic. It was hot and cramped but the crowd was loving it as can be witnessed in the video below.

For those not in the know Sol will be dropping a free ep this week (10/14) entitled the "Dear Friends," ep so keep an eye on his website because you don't want to miss that. While the rest of us were resting, recovering and re-embracing our 9-5s (uhh 7am-7pms) post Black Clover Beerfest our buddy Akream in the deep north was back to grinding on his upcoming album and putting the finishing tweaks on a track called "Beautiful Skin." (Hope you liked that run on sentence babies, I have plenty more where that came from. Stick around.) The track in question of course features one of our favorite Kansas City folks Mr. Mac Lethal. Its a far departure from Akream's previous body of work showcasing the softer more positive and uplifting message he's been promising with this project. When asked what information he'd like included with this debut his reply was simply, "My goal is to, with every track, make people smile. That is all." So there you have it kids, kick back relax and enjoy (Lovefest Online & AGM giving you the exclusive first listens) : Akream- Beautiful Skin ft. Mac Lethal (produced by Akream himself.)

Black Clover Pre-Party Introduction: The Cut Throat Freak Show

Juggling at sixteen seems like a relatively harmless activity until you meet Cut Throat of The Cut Throat Freak Show. Trading juggling lessons for fire breathing lessons in Venice, CA a natural evolution into an entire Sideshow was taking place. Linking up with a junior high friend, Fiasco, Cut Throat and Fiasco started doing their first shows in Lancaster, CA. Fire was juggled, glass was eaten and walked on, and shit was eaten. Yes. Shit sandwiches were served up for the show.

Here I sit, after a long day of plane rides for both Cut Throat and myself in Kansas City, MO. We’re both getting ready for Black Clover Beerfest. Me by drinking a couple of beers while waiting for our ride. Him by making a shopping list consisting of a cock pot, light bulbs, fuel, beer bottles, lighter, torch handles, AAA batteries, and a cardboard heckler sign. What’s more amazing is what TSA lets fly - firecrackers, eye hooks, BB guns, and 8 gauge piercing needles.

How did Cut Throat end up at Beerfest? I’m glad you asked. James Lynch, the sometimes tour manager for Black Clover, was heading out to Warped Tour in 2002/2003. Needing some volunteers to help load in and load out Cut Throat stepped up to the call of duty. When you are someone that lights your cock on fire and puts hooks through your eyes it’s not long before you’re showing off your talent. James was curious and started learning some of the Sideshow acts. Not many people can say “I’ve taken flesh hooks with James Lynch.” Cut Throat may be the only one that can.

Having gone through a few different line-ups, including a not so convincing Transvestite, the current roster is a solid one. DIM produces the music for the sideshow. Having evolved from a member of a punk band to now creating the electronic music for the Sideshow, DIM has been a main player for the last four years. Resident taxidermist, Slightly Curious, learned how to preserve little creatures from a slightly handicapped deaf man. She now creates anything you could imagine; pigeons with wings, mice with crab claws, two to three headed ducks and chickens and big eyes on anything that wouldn’t normally have them. Scratchy the dead sea squirrel is the last member of the lineup (which TSA also has no problem letting through the x-rays, although not without questionable glances to Cut Throat and Slightly Curious).

Cut Throat is on his own this weekend and improvising somewhat due to TSA confiscating his dull flesh hooks that would normally be used to suspend himself, but leaving him with the firecrackers. I can tell you - the cock pot is definitely happening.
Yes folks, this is the modern day Sideshow and it’s an exciting addition to an otherwise traditional hip hop weekend.

The Countdown Is On

I know a lot of my recent posts have been a bit Midwestcentric so I’m bringing it back to the Town for this one. Most of those familiar with this blog probably have at least a passing familiarity with the Let Go and its members. The Let Go is comprised of solo comedy rapper Type, Myspace beat mogul Captain Midnite, and of course the man of the hour, Kublakai. Next week Kublakai joins the ranks of The Physics, Grynch, Ripynt, and others to release free-p’s via the Internet this year. Kicking off what is already looking to be a blissfully music-heavy month, Kublakai is set to release "Lights for the Dark Nights" on September 1st for free download on his newly launched website http://www.kublakai.com/. Lights was exclusively produced by Slouch with guest spots from both Sol and the Gynch.

. . . . Here's Someone You Should Be Familiar With

Most of us going to Black Clover Beerfest are already well versed in Mac Lethal and Soulcrate. Those of us that grew up in the Midwest may already be down with Prof, the newest Black Clover crew member. But I would bet that most of us hadn't heard of Akream - until now. I am here to solve the mystery.

Akream is one of the most genuine people I have never me and had the opportunity to interview this evening. On the verge of more national exposure with Mac Lethal guesting and producing his upcoming album, he will be hitting the road in November through 2010 and his album, "For The Kids," will be out in January. I contacted him, made an offer, bought tickets and made it happen. I'm linked with all the venues up here so it was a snap.

We tweeted earlier about your "hardcore past" what did that stem from?

A
Well my content has always kinda leaned that way. But I came up kinda fucked up and was involved in some unsavory practices for the better part of my life. I've chilled a bit the last few years.

"DP" is, what I gathered, a highly sexualized album - how has marriage and children affected your writing style?

A
It's not as sexualized as you might think. The title was an inside joke. I meant more of the hustle talk and all that. As well as my demeanor on my songs.
Marriage has help me to look at things from a different perspective. My goal now is while you're listening to my music, I want you to be able to smile the entire time. That goes for live performance as well. I may perform a little hardcore ish at beerfest though. IT'S BEERFEST! HAHA.

What I was speaking was complete truth. It's just a fucked up way to live and I have several friends in prison and have for years. I just woke up before I ever had to spend a day in jail. That was my life though.

Did the music help you get through all that?

A
The music did help. It was a constant reminder that I wanted better for myself than to be a life long drug dealer, ya know. I want to make people happy, not ruin lives.

A lot of people would think that hip hop and drugs go had in hand, there are definitely a lot of major label artists out there that started out dealing. Why do you think the two have become so closely related?

A
Well, i think when you come from nothing, drug dealing is easy to get into and I kinda grew up in it. Didn't have to seek it out. It was always there. the same people can't afford to buy instruments and start a band but anyone can rap. You have rappers now that didn't even listen to rap until 2004 and all of a sudden they are an MC. Hip hop was a fixture in my life from the time I was a baby. I was born in 80! That's what it was all about then.

How did Alaska influence your youth and your path with your music? How easy was it for you to get exposed to hip hop? (i grew up in North Dakota, it was hard enough up there)

A
Anchorage is a city like any other in America. The side of town I grew up on, hip hop was what was happening. I didn't listen to other types of music until I had girlfriends in my teens. See, hip hop was never a thing that I looked at from afar. My life was your typical hip hop upbringing. They just happened to have a name for it, ya know. I wrote my first rhyme in 88 when I was in 3rd grade.

One of our Lovefesters - Crista - is curious as to the scene in Alaska - how supportive are you all of each other? (some cities show more community love / respect than others)

Everyone is pretty supportive and we have a lot going on up here. I host b-boy events, I open up for every big act that comes up here. I won the Artist Of The Year Award at the Hip Hop awards here last year. I'm a fixture in the scene up here. A lot of people are inspired by the things I'm doing out of state now. Touring, beerfest, etc.

Wanting to see bcr boys is why i wanted to cover you - so that people can get to know you before beerfest. So why travel for beerfest - how do you see that benefiting your career?

Well, I'm doing well enough financially to do it, first of all. I'll give out mad cds and sell merch and it gives me more time to bond and strategize with Mac and the boys. And he's my friend and he asked me to come. Some people go on vacation. I go rock shit around the world.

How did your label, Arctic Flow, come about?

Got the logo, got my paperwork in order, started recording and promoting. Pretty simple. It helps to be a good mc or else why would anyone give a shit? haha. At first, I just wanted to be respected in my state. A few years later, it was bigger than me and kinda took on a life of it's own. To the point where more people knew about the label than the artists on the label.Kinda became more of a group than a label. Kinda like wu-tang. but we were always solo artists. That's why when I wanted to sign someone else, I started my other company, Ice Box Entertainment so that there was no confusion.

1. I'm very down to earth and love being social. Not standoffish at all

2. I am in a transitional phase musically so they will notice a wide spectrum in my set

3. My upcoming album is entitled, 'For The Kids'. The kids being us, the heads, the general public who still dares to dream and loves to have fun

4. I'm a married father of 2 who wouldn't have it any other way

I won't say it wouldn't ever happen. When I can afford to tour with a band, I probably will. But I am also truly content with 2 turntables and a microphone~

What's the tour process like for you? how easy are the promoters to work with?

It depends. I personally do well with nearly no sleep, living out a suitcase, performing every night for a couple of weeks and still remaining mentally intact. The promoters are like anyone else. Some are on top of their shit and are a joy to work with, others make me wonder why they agreed to do a show in the first place.

It can be but my family is awesome. They don't make 'em like my wife anymore. She's a hardcore chick and she handles biz while I'm away. Being away from my babies is the hardest and they are too young to understand why daddy isn't home

So we've kept this under our hats for a couple weeks but the more observant of you may have noticed a new name has appeared on our sidebar... Yes, we are PROUD, thrilled, over the bloody moon excited to welcome a new member to our little family. Izzie came into our lives around the same time we started Lovefest (fun fact: Lovefest was supposed to only be a working title.. oops!)and honestly if we'd met her six months earlier she definitely would have been on the original roster. I know we've neglected the East Coast a bit but with Izzie on board we should have the DC/Philly/Baltimore area covered. To help you get to know our newest member a little better I emailed her some questions to be answered in rhyme form. Check the video and welcome our newest correspondent, Izzie. So I know its been a hot minute since I poked my head in over here but I promise I've been working on some things that I think will be pretty awesome including another collaboration with Miss Samiha. Enough excuses, the real reason for this post is that I desperately need to get something off my chest: No Bird Sing is the best thing to grace my headphones in the last six months. Easily.

It is safe to say our excitement about certain projects gets tossed around pretty frequently around Lovefest and among our extended family. I love that on a near weekly basis I get that "ZOMG" 3am text from Samiha quoting the most recent "best lyrics I've ever heard." And when Georgia recaps a show in which her "soul was touched" I can't help but smile. No Bird Sing makes me want to text everyone I have ever met at 3am all the time. To those who have actually received that text... I'm sorry, I hope I didn't wake you.

I was actually first introduced to No Bird Sing when they friend requested me on myspace believe it or not. I admit I physically cringe when I get a new myspace friend request from a music page, but I always find time to give whatever it is a listen before hitting deny. I think I barely got through the one song on their page before I was demanding to know where I could find more, following them on twitter and google stalking them. To save you the trouble the group is made up of members of both Hyder Ali and Abzorbr, they're described as "a cross between Crescent Moon and Black Keys", their cd comes out September 11th and they give me chills.

By now I'm sure we all know that a reviewer/critic I am not. So here's the part where I let you listen and draw your own conclusions. Those in the Twin City area may have noticed a certain young man who treks out to various shows and sets up his audio equipment in the back of the venue rain, snow or shine to record the sets. In case you were wondering many of those recordings can be found on Empty's Tapes. Among those recordings you will find No Bird Sing at the Triple Rock. I actually met John a few years back during the Mel Gibson and the Pants residency at the Nomad. After reading over that blog entry I realised he actually told me about NBS almost a year ago outside some show or other. I really dropped the ball on that one huh? In addition to these live gems you can also download ars poetica over at Culture Bully (where you can find plenty of additional NBS into) as well as Dead Leaves ft. Bo Ramsey over at Midwest Broadcast.

If all that isn't enough to pique your curiosity their upcoming album also features Eyedea, Kristoff Krane and Alicia Wiley. I can pretty much guarantee this will be in my top three releases of the year so if you are in the Twin Cities area or passing through I highly recommend scooting your tails on over to Eclipse Records on September 11th and the Triple Rock on September 12th for those release shows. Did I mention the 11th is ALL AGES and Big Trouble and El Guante+Big Cats! will also be performing? No excuses youngins. For all the old fogies (18+) the Triple Rock show will feature Black Blondie (be still my heart), Kristoff Krane and James Diers. Oh and the most awkward redhead alive (yes me) just might be in town for both.

I know some of you probably can't wait all the way until the 11th to witness a live set and I feel your pain... but you don't have to because you can catch them earlier in the month on the 5th at the Clapperclaw Festival... but you better tell me all about it because the line up for that is really great. How pretty is that? You know you want one.

Fever Of Love

A few years ago, a friend introduced me to a band called "The Knife" a brother and sister duo from Sweden that made music similar to The Ting Tings, if I had to find a comparison. It was good, I suppose, and interesting. But when I stumbled upon the female vocalist Karin Dreijer Andersson's solo project "Fever Ray", I was deeply intrigued.
This past July, Fever Ray released a self-titled album. I was instantly struck by the monochromatic artwork that vibrated with intense linework on an album that seemed to be made out of a velvety-paper product that shone like vinyl. It opened up to have a poster of the same artwork with lyrics on the back, imagery that would suit my walls most definitely!
I played the album and was impressed with the first single, If I Had a Heart, a song for which I had seen the visually stunning and haunting video. The song starts with a pulsating piano note that echoes through your ears and leaves you wanting more. Karin's vocals are deep and full of effects that create this menacing character you can't seem to escape, paired with her authentic and small feminine voice. Her lyrics convey the feeling of what the audience must feel, if they are anyone like me. "More, give me more, give me more."
The second song "When I Grow Up" is a more upbeat song, with an almost euro-disco vibe infused with tribal drums and echoing voices. The video is equally strange as the lyrics "When I grow up, I want to be a forrester, run through the moss on high heels".
This whole album is filled with Karin's experimentations with 80's synths and tribal drums, unapologetic attitude and an "I'm coming to get you" feeling. Anyone that enjoys not knowing what's coming around the corner and being musically stimulated in unusual ways is in for a treat. And I'm not one to appreciate female artists for the sake of being female, because I think it is condescending to separate them from their deserved "artist" label, BUT I find Karin to be impressively intimidating: She wrote the lyrics, produced the beats, AND mixed the shit. If I do have to give props to a woman for being powerful and fiercely independent, then this girl gets my vote.

Rain, rain (don't) go away...

I love the rain. No, I REALLY love the rain. I love the smell of wet grass, the freshness of cleansed air, and the rainbows in puddles on the roads. Rain is sensual. Rain, for all man's existence, has been associated with cleansing, rebirth, growth, fertility, and renewal. Rain is paired with every living thing like an undying marriage, giving birth to change and new beginnings. I love the sound of rain on a car roof when you're warm and safe inside. I also love to open my windows and listen to music when it rains. I don't mind a few stray raindrops getting inside, and I welcome the wind as my stereo serenades me in my solitude. I have created a list of songs I recommend for rainy day enthusiasts (Seattle-ites will hate me for this blog entry!). Hip Hop Matchmaking: the Dream Team Edition

We could talk music for days and not run out of excitement or things to say. Tonight, like one too many nights before it, we fantasized about what our dream collaborations and tour line ups would be. Few of these pairings came easily, since we have very different individual tastes. Salina is almost completely unfamiliar with Samiha's favorite collective while Samiha is just beginning to dip her toes into NW hip hop. We welcome the opportunity to learn from one another and exchange new and old favorites on a day-to-day basis, but when it comes down to picking three dream collaborations and three dream line ups, "convince me" becomes the theme of the evening. After much back and forth, some compromise, and a few "gimmies", we give you the artists we wish had met in space camp.

Whenever the conversation of dream collaborations come up, the first suggestion is ALWAYS "El Guante and Macklemore, right?" There are not many things that we instantly and wholeheartedly agree on, so when we do you know it is something special. There is the perfect symmetry of similarities and differences to make for a really amazing track (*coughalbumcough*). Both emcees bring a brave honesty to their lyrics. Just as Guante emphasizes the importance of crafting an insightful and interesting angle for every story he tells, Macklemore picks apart every concept, experience, and emotion to create his own original yet relatable take. At the same time, it's exciting and comforting to know that their collaboration probably wouldn't be entirely serious; both emcees have been known to occasionally let their humorous, sarcastic, and playful sides run wild. Guante and Macklemore could probably create the type of perfectly cohesive and balanced yet layered song (*coughalbumcough*) that rappers and fans just dream about. (*coughproducedbybudoandbigcats!cough*)

The second duo also needed no argument or clarification was Mac Lethal and P.O.S. Having already toured and recorded (unreleased) music together, the collaboration was easily a slam dunk. Coupled with the fact that the collaboration seems to be so close to materializing, we could not help but make one more plea for it. Their chemistry would be great; it would be like listening in on a hilarious and completely uncensored conversation between two friends. We can't of course take full credit for coming up with this one, but it's hard not to daydream about what they might come up with together over a Lazerbeat.

When Salina proposed Mike Mictlan and Invincible, Samiha had to take a pause to let the idea fully sink in. Mike was definitely on both our lists, but Samiha had him paired a little differently. After some back and forth it was agreed that this was undoubtedly a dream collaboration for both of us. The blend of sounds and two emcees who can not only match one another evenly but can also challenge one another to step it up intrigued us. It's just crazy enough that it makes total sense.

Creating a concert series of perfect line ups was a little more difficult than our first task. In fact, the only indisputable line up was the often-drooled-over-on-Lethalville teaming of Black Clover Records and Doomtree Records. With both labels bursting at the seams with insane energy and live talents, the possibilities are endless. Plus, what better venue to debut that Mac Lethal/P.O.S. track?

On a Northwestcentric note with a pinch of Midwest flavor, we thought of Thee Satisfaction, Candidt, Step Cousins (Macklemore and Xperience), and Muja Messiah. This would not be one of those nights where half the acts sound the same, while the other half lack the stage presence or crowd awareness to keep you from checking Twitter every few moments. Four acts with chemistry for days, they could offer a little something for everyone. Candidt would get the party started, Thee Satisfaction would get everyone vibing, and Step Cousins or Muja would burn the joint down. You'd dance, you'd bob your head, you'd wave your hand in your signature cool hip hop way, you'd get a full body workout.

After attending so many straight-up hip hop shows, it would be nice to do something a little different: a night of singing, piano playing, band performing, and rapping courtesy of Tonedeff, Louis Logic, and Dessa. Dream Team Unplugged edition. Ego and braggadocio would be set aside for another type of swagger. The three artists would put their raw talent on display, proving that they can sing ballads with just as much confidence, poise, and charm. And maybe there would be time for a jam session, one that would be so creative and productive that the three artists would then leave the show and head straight to the nearest studio to record a genre-crossing, mind-blowing album? *Sigh* If only we should be so lucky....

So there you have it. After much debate, good natured name calling, and endless "ZOMGS!" we give you matches made in Samiha and Salina heaven. We brewed them up with love and care in our super secret special Lovefest laboratory deep within our underground lair with the aid of a little love potion number nine and our Mr. Wizard chemistry kit. We prefer hate/love mail in the form of mix cds. Beware of dogs.

No Place Like Home

Often before heading to Minneapolis or Chicago, Fargo is a destination city for MidWest kids who are ready to start cutting their teeth in the hip hop community. Believe it or not dues are being paid up north in a city of 90,000. In a region where weather extremes are endured there are b-boys and b-girls, beat makers and beatboxers, MC’s, and those of us that love participating by going to every show under the sun.

At a show this weekend, while home for a wedding, it occurred to me that Lovefest needs to know what’s going down in Fargo. I grabbed Aaron (B-boy “ATS”), Derrick (Rapper “FDR”), and Justin (Rapper “Stick Figure”) for a quick interview. I also had a lot of footage of the first Fargo B-Boy Crew - Ill Technique - I picked out to share with you guys some clips that I feel show the range these B-Boys have.

To catch some of you up to speed- Meandyoucrew has been responsible for helping to bring hip hop to Fargo. Having been a rapper since Junior High, Kipp is one half of the first lineup that remained a constant. The most recent lineup, having been Kipp and Jem P ( out of Chicago ) met during their college years in Fargo-Moorhead. There was a while when venues were being threatened by an overhaul in state liquor laws. While we had always had local artists gigging around town - MYC really brought hip hop to the area. Surviving potential liquor law changes our venues were ours again and stronger then ever with the added sounds of hip hop.

Since I hadn’t planned to do something for Lovefest originally I missed out on getting my good friend Toby (Beatboxer “Toby Beatbox”) on camera, but I strongly encourage you to check his myspace or get to a show he’s part of. His peers have referred to him as the “next step in the evolution of man.”

Beowulf and his Tragic Flaws

Fans pay tribute all over the world.

In 8th grade Literature class, I remember my teacher talking about "tragic heroes" and their "tragic flaws". I recall an example from the old story Beowolf, where his courage, typically considered a positive trait, led to his ultimate demise. Another example would be Romeo, the lovestruck teenager, crumbling under the influence of his burning passion, where one would expect the protagonist to succeed in his quest for love. Michael Jackson, you could say, is our generation's tragic hero.

In hearing of the death of Michael Jackson, I was frozen. I was at work, a place with no room for emotional wavering, and decided to withhold my reaction until I could be alone. There, in my car, on my break, I cried.

I cried because I lost a lot that day. I didn't just lose an idol of my youth; I lost a part of my childhood. I lost the kid, at 6 years old, that was so in love with Michael that I requested "Rock With You" from my local radio station once a day for weeks. I'd huddle around my sister's neon pink and green radio and listen with baited breath.

I lost the kid that used to write "Mrs. Michael Jackson" in crayon during my after school program with my childhood friend Jassenia, equally obsessed. I remember watching Moonwalker until the tape broke in my neighbor's vcr. I cried all night.

There's something about Michael that was frozen in a time of youth and innocence. It's my opinion that Michael suffered severe trauma from the repeated domestic abuse and lack of childhood. The kid just wanted to be....a kid. And here he was, mid-thirties, doing his best to ensure that no child in his presence be mistreated the same way. In this effort to change the world and the way we consider our youth, he fell prey to suspicious situations that led to his character destruction and eventually became almost what one could say is a joke. (Ahem, southpark. Yeah I thought it was hillarious.)

In this tragic tale of innocence misunderstood and strange antics performed by the king of pop himself, we saw the crumbling of a legend. And upon his death? His fans rose and joined in celebrating his AMAZING talent, global appeal, passionate love for animals and children and mourned the loss of our previous selves, inspired by the magic and the entertainment that was Michael.

Michael's death reminds us not only of our mortality generally speaking, but also reminds us of the growing pains we experience throughout life, far into adulthood. These times are full of sacrifice, loss of innocence, and circumstances we simply cannot explain nor control. In these times we are staring aging, and eventually death, in the face. These are the times to remind ourselves what life is all about, something Michael was much in touch with- love, music, our earth, and our future generations. We have lost a great legend.

Rest In Peace, Michael Jackson.

Mid West/West Coast hybrid Silentarmy released a video this week for his track "Still Addicted" off of his DVD "The Sight."

A close friend of Hip Hop Lovefest, Ron, came out to film the interview. Some parts are a little hard to hear (gotta love LA traffic, even on back streets), so scoot a little closer to your speakers and enjoy.

Whirlwind Soundset '09 Weekend (a collaborative post)

When it comes to packing I raise chaos to an art form so it was an event bordering on miraculous when I was packed and ready to roll a record breaking five minutes before my ride to the airport. For me there is something strangely calming about finally touching down at MSP and it was a truly beautiful Thursday evening in Minneapolis when I arrived. Linked up with Crista at the lightrail station on Franklin and we were off. A lazy evening spent gossiping about hip hop and the impending weekend. We managed to swoop through Last of the Record Buyers for a bit. I wish I could have caught one while they were still at the Dinkytowner, it just felt odd at Fifth Element. It will be interesting to see if they keep it there and how that works out.

I wasn't as prepared as I thought I was for this weekend. It was all a blissful blur. After arriving in Minneapolis May 23rd, the first activity on the list was the Big Quarters release party at the Triple Rock. The line wrapped around the building, and the night was buzzing with taxis blaring hip hop, scenesters complaining about life, and triple rock regulars guzzling drinks barside. The show started an hour later than posted, but I wasn't very surprised. Any hip hop show I've been to goes by the same formula: they say 8, you come at 9. The lineup was a menagerie of local talent. The energy even in the line was so amazing to me. I was bouncing from one end to another hugging, laughing and catching up with old and new friends alike. It was just a beautiful community vibe and it makes me sad that a lot of those kids I only get to catch up with in person this one weekend a year.

First to open was Crescent Moon. A favorite of mine since P.O.S.'s Ipecac Neat was released ("Spanish rice, burritos and a plate of fish. Man that sounds good as hell, I'm tastin' it") He gave a great performance with abrasive beats infused with native drums and a darker undertone. He did some spoken word and reinforced why I'm such a fan. He has a presence about him that is abrasive and arresting, but not intimidating. Oddjobs, Kill the Vultures, Roma di Luna, Crescent Moon is in Big Trouble... You name it if Crescent Moon is on it I can pretty much garuntee it falls into my comfort food of music catagory. You'll never catch me missing out on an opportunity to catch Kill the Vultures (Ecce Beast!)

Next was Big Zach (of Kanser) with Alissa Paris whose hair was a memorable throwback to the 80's flat top. She got a lot of compliments on her style, and I agreed: not many people can pull that look off. Big Zach (the host as well) did a few songs, one including a tribute song to the history of the Minneapolis rap scene and the legends of which it has been comprised. It was a big hit and had a lot of names I recognized. I've always enjoyed his warm stage presence and light-hearted nature. Big Zach is good people.
Lastly before Big Quarters came on was Mankwe (you've probably seen her sing backup for Atmosphere on their many tours). She sauntered on the stage with an aura of elegance, and stimulated the audience with jazz-and-spoken-word infused songs with only an electric bass as an accompaniment until her last song, where Medium Zach joined and played a jazzy-tribal beat for a single from her album. Her songs were an eclectic mix of sass and soul.

When Big Quarters came onstage, the audience was enamored and ecstatic. The first song was full of energy, and every audience member had their hands up. With guests such as Toki Wright, M.anifest, I.Self.Divine., and P.O.S., it was pure fun. The audience was compelled to dance and the beats rocked our rib cages. They performed for almost an hour and had the audience involved the whole time. Great show! I have so much respect for what these guys do and how dedicated they are to both their craft and their fans. You can see it in the reciprocated energy of their audience at every show they play. If you haven't been checking them yet times a wasting! I'm plugging this again because I think its a really great deal and a perfect example of just how hard Big Quarters grinds. $5 a month for 5 new songs every month. June featured Toki Wright and a Mux Mool remix of Hand Over Fist's Prizefight. Do yourself a favor and become a "Director" nooooww.

Soundset Soundset Soundset. I'm going to just say it Soundset 2009 was about a hundred times better then 2008. I even shock myself when saying that, I mean Aesop Rock was at '08... Mac Lethal was at '08... it was still in MINNEAPOLIS in '08. I don't think it had anything to do with the lineup, or the location, but the people really made it great this year. I had a chance to meet a bunch of people from Lethalville... and come on Internet message board friends... what could be better? Friends came in town from all over, including London, and I couldn't walk more then 10 feet without running into someone I knew. Everyone seemed to get along, despite the one dirty ass cat fight we did witness. Sage and I decided the vibe was similar to Scribble Jam.

My biggest and only (aside from the parking disaster and food tickets) complaint this year has to be where in the world was Mac Lethal? Honestly Grieves repped it hard for Black Clover on the Fifth stage but I know Crista and I were not the only ones grumbling and rumbling about the shunning of Mac Lethal. Grieves was on of my favorite sets of the day I'm more and more impressed with the addition of Budo to the live show every time I see it and seeing Lovefest favorite, Macklemore, get up and do a song with them was a treat as well (respect the Rick Ross piece.)

The weather was gorgous and it was nice to be able to check in and spend some time with so many other out of towners and locals. I'm pretty sure I'm still in hug withdrawal from that weekend. (more hugs please!) I got crispy to Hand Over Fist. I'm pretty sure Lazerbeak is one of the happiest dudes on the planet. Sims kept shit rowdy with promises of a winter release. (Yes please!) Doomtree block was solid as usual.

I was most stoked about seeing El-P perform, the last time he was in town my friends dragged me to Nappy Roots and I had to miss his show. So I was not about to miss him again this time. It was a main-stage show, and I really don't do well in big crowds, I'm about 5'2" and always end up behind the tallest man alive. So I kicked in the bleachers with Salina and Abjekt which was perfect. Dibbs as always was great to watch, and El was almost what I expected. A little more energy wouldn't have hurt, it almost seemed like he confused the crowed who at that point were posted up waiting for Atmosphere. I'm not going to lie, I totally played the fan girl at the after party, and went up to El and was terrified. I've always been a Defjux kinda girl and admire the way he runs the label; and who knows when he opportunity to express that would arise again, plus I'm pretty forward I tend to blurt out anything most of the time anyway. So I was lucky enough to thank him for what he does, and he was very responsive and appreciative which is always refreshing.

Most of the day for me was spent wandering around, watching a few minutes of a set here and there, and bullshitting. I think this what brought me back to scribble jam the most. It was just a great mix of like minded people hanging out. A lot of the day was spent with Mes and Marolyn while the held it down at their booth.((shameless blog promo for fresherthan.com)) It is always great to have a home-base at this kinda thing, and that was definitely it.

The theme of the day was definitely hanging out with good people and home base was the GCS booth. Mes and Marolyn were kind enough to share their shade and company throughout the day. Sososo much love to our Fresher Than friends. *cough*downloadSTEALINGSTARS*cough* Ahem.

The only other set I HAD TO SEE was Buck 65. Buck held down the 5th element stage while MF Doom did his thing on the main stage. I've always loved Buck, and didn't want to miss his performance which a good size crowed stuck around for. I really didn't have any desire to see Doom, and still don't know if it was even him? The verdict ruled he actually did show up, after missing his original performance time. Buck danced, and dj'd his way through a good sized site, including Wicked and Weird, Roses and Bluejays, and Centaur. It was kind of that camp-fire sing along vibe surrounded by indie rap kids in a parking lot under direct sunlight. I can easily say this was my favorite performance of the day.

YES! Buck 65 was hands down the Lovefest pick for Soundset 2009 MVP. If you only caught one act this year his was the one to watch. So good.

After party! I think this will always be my favorite part of Soundset weekend. After a grueling hot day in the sun its a collective sigh of relief to finally relax indoors red faced and grimy but blissfully content. A quick breather, drinks, dancing your ass off, more hugs and hip hop karaoke. The homies Patric and Ander both killed it. Ander doing E&A with a little help from Eyedea and less help from Abilities was a highlight of the night. I caught Crista doing some hip hop of her own as witnessed above. Can't wait to see everyone again next year! KC holler at your girls in September and NY, Crista and I will be seeing you in October. <3

The Power of Action, Words, and Music: Interview with Macklemore!

Hip-hop just hurt me so good. It left me with an overwhelming sense of inspiration, encouragement, and affirmation. It reminded me that music and musicians can really change minds, lives, and worlds. I am a big believer in being involved with social justice and community activism, and nothing makes me happier than when these two things are combined with hip-hop to form the ultimate trifecta. It’s rare, but if a musician pulls this combination off with genuine sincerity and commitment, I’m a goner.

It happened with Macklemore, a Seattle-based rapper who just finished a tour with Black Clover’s Grieves and his partner-in-crime and producer Budo. First told about his music by fellow Lovefester Salina, I was properly introduced to Macklemore at the last stop of the “Falling Off Your Shoes” tour at the Knitting Factory in New York City. By the end of his set, which included songs from his 2005 “The Language of My World” debut, songs from his upcoming free hip-hop/rock EP with Seattle photographer and producer Ryan Lewis, and songs from his yet-to-be-completed sophomore release, I knew I had experienced something special. Here was someone who came not only to entertain concertgoers, but also to educate, impact, and challenge them. With each song, he effortlessly proved that he had the skills to write great rhymes and the energy to put on captivating performances. But with each song, he went on to prove something even more impressive; he appreciated the context, history, and culture of hip-hop, and possessed a sensitivity to the intricacies and ills of the society which initially birthed and today sustains the genre. The result was passionate and heartfelt personal reflections tinged with intelligent social commentary. And no, this was not on some basic “BUSH SUCKS!” or “OBAMA WILL SAVE THE WORLD!” tip.

Take, for example, “White Privilege,” a performance he prefaced with the recommendation that “if there is anything you take away tonight, let it be this song.” Picking up where Murs’ “And This is For…” left off, the song addresses the growing presence of white rappers in a genre that grew out of experiences of disenfranchisement amongst African Americans. Macklemore tries to come to terms with the fact that “hip-hop started off on a block that I’ve never been to / to counteract a struggle that I’ve never even been through / if I think that I understand just because I flow too / that means I’m not keeping it true”. In trying to find his place in a genre that he loves, he admits that “I give everything I have when I write a rhyme / but that doesn’t change the fact that this culture is not mine”. By describing both the original and current state of hip-hop, Macklemore does what very few rappers do; he presents the issue in such a way that it actually manages to cut across generational, racial, and mainstream and underground lines and encourage a constructive dialogue about race within hip-hop.

Couple performances like that with songs like “I Said Hey,” where he warns that “all the money in the world can help you look like a star / but money can’t buy you the heart to go put inside your bars,” or “Soldiers,” in which he addresses the flawed incarceration system and says that “what we need is people that actually get involved / that can educate / get their hands dirty / get in the institute and make a difference from the inside out,” or “City Don’t Sleep,” where he raps, “if you want to see change, then put your ones in the air / now point them to yourself because change starts right there,” I knew I had to pick apart this fella’s brain. And if he really held these views, then I had found my new best friend.

Because Macklemore’s subject matter is what spoke to me the most, that was what I was most interested in talking about. In addressing the process through which he creates his songs, Macklemore admits, “I make music to channel something greater than myself. When you’re trying to choose subject matter, you’re doing too much. My music in the purest form comes through me. My lyrics are sparked by listening to a beat, and the experiences that beat conjures up.” By focusing on specific experiences rather than general concepts, Macklemore stays away from clichés like the ladies song and the club banger. This organic process also forces Macklemore to provide uncensored and honest glimpses into his true self.

Because Macklemore refuses to sugar-coat his personality, everything about him is fair game for subject matter. He reflects, “I put all of myself – the good, the bad, the imperfect, the struggles – into my music because that’s when I’m most human.” In addition to addressing serious issues, he raps at length about his little friend Alfonso on the Type-esque “Penis Song.” He admits that while “humor can be a good way to lure people in,” it can also be strategic in that it introduces listeners to an album whose first full-length song is “White Privilege.” The diverse subject matter grabs different audiences and makes them all “think in a different way about issues they have not thought about before, or issues that they don’t want to address,” says Macklemore. By encouraging listeners to reevaluate their own perspective, Macklemore once more shows the purpose he brings to his music; just as he proved with his live performances, he again proves that his music serves for more than just to entertain.

Macklemore consciously strives to uphold that responsibility in all his music. In order to address serious social issues in his songs, he offers, “you have to live life in a way that’s conducive to your music. If you’re not involving yourself with social justice, if you’re not thinking outside of yourself, if your motivation for making music is selfish, then your music is going to reflect that narrowness.” For a long time now, Macklemore has been an active volunteer at prisons. In college, he co-facilitated a writing workshop in which he helped inmates craft rap songs. The inmates then performed these songs in a final cultural fair that was essentially a hip-hop concert. Since then, Macklemore has begun tutoring inmates and helping them get their GEDs. These volunteer opportunities are what bring authenticity to songs like “Soldiers”.

In addition to adding credibility to his music, Macklemore’s volunteer experiences allow him to think beyond his own music; “music is one side of a greater picture of who I am and what I can contribute to society,” he says. He envisions eventually starting a program that provides kids who have been through juvenile rehabilitation with a productive path forward. By giving them access to recording studios, he hopes to one day create a constructive outlet for their budding creativity.

With an appreciation for honest hip-hop, real-life experience in community activism, and a commitment to social justice, Macklemore effortlessly pulls off the trifecta. In this day and age of apathetic youth and misinformed figureheads, it’s so, so, so absolutely refreshing and downright inspiring to see that rappers like him exist. It takes only one musician and one listener to start a dialogue, and it only takes a couple people to start a movement… so the ball is in your court, world. Spread the music, spread the word.

Soundset weekend was huge and this is not the official re-cap but a little teaser...

I've been a fan of Grieves since I saw him as a scrawny little DJ on the Everybody Loves a Clown tour. Every since then I have made an effort to catch the show whenever he came to town. The biggest development in his music has been the addition of Budo. Not only dropping an album together but performing as a group Grieves and Budo were an act I was set on watching perform at Soundset.

I am a fan of a good live show no matter how you spin it. Sage always kills it with nothing more then a discman. The dynamic of these two is not that of most Rapper and DJ combinations. Grieves has an intense energy about himself on his own; adding Budo to the mix incorporating things like a trumpet and guitar - is nothing short of impressive. I decided to take my chance and ask Budo a few questions, keep in mind kids - first time interview here....

It's going to be a good summer. My favorite season. Poolside conversations, drinks with umbrellas, birthdays (holler, Cancers!), sunburns, and lots of air conditioning if you live in Phoenix, like me.

I'm really stoked on the idea of free mixtapes and downloadable songs. Artists are beginning to branch out and away from depending on major record labels and music stores to distribute their material. The whole DIY vibe is much more accessable, realistic (it's hard to muster up the courage to spend $15 on an album unless I'm SURE I love it), and enables the fans to gobble up more releases from their favorite artists. Sure, losing the hard-copies of albums hurts artists like me a little bit, who depend on people buying the physical copies to display their cover art, but in the case of GahedinDIE, we always include the artwork to make the realeases more interactive.

Times in the music business are changing, but as far as I see it, differen't isn't necessarily worse!

Long Live Free Music.

[SHOW REVIEW] Dessa in Staten Island + pics + video!

Let’s ignore the fact that I’m the most neglectful and perhaps laziest contributor on this blog, and cut to the chase. I saw Dessa last night, and I am now going to attempt to convey exactly how freaking ridiculously amazing the show was. My friend Rahel and I initially had concert and bus tickets to see Atmosphere, Brother Ali, and Attracted to Gods in Washington DC last night, but we decided that we could, should, and would skip seeing them a third time in a row (after Boston and Philly) in order to see THE Dessa.

Dessa posted about the show only a couple days before the date, so we all conjured up our own elaborate explanations about how this show came about and what the show would be like. Mike and I were holding out hope that Dessa would bring Cecil or Sims or another Doomtree-er out, and we were both convinced that it would be a really intimate setting that would make for a really personal and especially heartfelt performance.

The hypothesizing continued right up until the show started. My cousin Farzana, Rahel, and I arrived at the venue a good two hours ahead of time. As many of you know, I’m not the most mature person in the world so I proceeded to go wild over the fact that patrons were allowed to use crayons to color on the butcher paper table coverings. I colored my best (and still laughable) attempt wings and teeth and made my dream playlist, while Rahel got busy with the Doomtree stamp.

Keeping one eye on our artistic creations on the table and another eye on the door, I soon noticed a woman walking around with a Dessa shirt. I pounced on her, only to find out that she was Dessa’s aunt. This woman was so ridiculously sweet. She was so proud of Dessa, talking about how talented, intelligent, and beautiful Dessa was. It always makes me so happy to see family members talk about musicians. She told us how Dessa grew up with her aunts always harmonizing around her, and how that influences her music today. The pride that family members have, coupled with their insights about a musician, are just so interesting and adorable to me. Plus, this wom an was cheering like crazy during Dessa’s set. Family is the best.

Really though, it was no surprise that her aunt was having such a good time because Dessa’s set was absolutely incredible. I know that I have a tendency to reuse the same extreme adjectives to describe music and concerts, but I only do so because I am genuinely moved by all of these things. It may have been because the venue was a low-key bar, but Dessa performed more of her melancholy, slower songs. Listening to her on Kites, If & When, and on the singing parts of 551 was just mesmerizing. I would have liked to hear songs like Veteran or Scuffle (BECAUSE SALINA SAID SO OVER AND OVER AGAIN!), but I can see why she might have opted not do those. With every song she did, she put every last ounce of herself into the performance. From the way she held the mic, to the way she twitched her mouth or raised her eyebrows, to the way she looked at the crowd, you could tell that she was fully encapsulated by the song. I’ve noticed that Louis Logic does this too, but I think Dessa has absolutely perfected it. Every movement compliments the song, bringing her stories to life with such an authenticity and emotion that you can’t help but be in complete awe. And this is where the song selection makes sense again. They completely lend themselves to a dimly lit, intimate, bare/simple, and ultimately deeply personal performance. And talking to Rahel and Farzana afterwards, they both agreed that that subtlety is what makes Dessa so amazing. From the way she dresses to the way she performs, everything is so stripped down that you’re left just starring at her raw and unbridled talent. I think what made it all even more special is knowing how talented she is, and knowing that small performances like this are going to be so rare in years to come when she gets all the fame, fortune, and fans that she undoubtedly deserves. And if the new material she performed was any indication of what is in store for Dessa, then the world better watch out. The spoken word pieces she performed, and the two brand new songs she performed were just too freaking good.

Given the total sense of admiration and amazement I felt for her performance, it was an absolute pleasure to interview her for Hip-Hop Lovefest’s first ever vlog. I asked her some questions about her professorship, her collaborations with other Minneapolis cats, how she feels about being a female in a male-dominated industry (the creativity of that question really threw you guys off didn’t it?!), and what’s in store for Dessa and Doomtree.
